In the Dream House by Carmen Maria Machado: A Book Recommendation

In the Dream House

In the Dream House by Carmen Maria Machado

I recently finished reading a very stylized memoir called In the Dream House by Carmen Maria Machado, and I have to say, it was one of the most captivating and emotional books I’ve read in a while.

The book is about a relationship that went terribly wrong, and the author provides a powerful analysis of the mechanisms and cultural depictions of psychological abuse.

What I found particularly unique about this memoir is the structure of the chapters, which revolve around a different narrative trope. Each chapter is its own vignette. From the haunted house to erotica and even bildungsroman, Machado examines the relationship from a variety of perspectives.

She also reflects on her religious upbringing, challenges the stereotype of lesbian relationships as idyllic, and delves into the history of abuse in queer relationships. Specifically, it deals with the nuances of lesbian-on-lesbian abuse and how oddly it’s portrayed in the media.

Despite the heavy subject matter, Machado’s writing is infused with her trademark wit, humor, and intellectual curiosity. This book was both mesmerizing and thought-provoking, challenging my preconceptions about what a memoir could be. Itโ€™s a sad and dark yet enlightening read.

A house is never apolitical. It is conceived, constructed, occupied, and policed by people with power, needs, and fears.

Permission to judge a book by its cover!

This is one of the most captivating covers on my shelf right now! It reminds me a little of Alice in Wonderland.
